Cure for Cold Sores
Cold sores are caused by the herpes virus, and they are usually quite benign, although they
make you very self-conscious of your appearance. The best cure for cold sores will allow you to get back to
your normal social life.
When you first feel the beginnings of a cold sore,
don't scratch the area. This will cause it to spread, and you'll feel and look worse than you already do. You
should, instead, keep the area clean and dry. You can use soapy water on a wash cloth to clean it, and then be
sure to put it in the laundry, so you're not spreading it while you're cleaning it.

Use Vaseline petroleum jelly on the cold sore area,
since it forms a protective barrier that will stop spreading. Be sure that you wash your hands well after you
touch your skin when you are applying a cure for cold sores, so that you don't spread the sores to any other
part of your body.
Soaking a Q-tip in Benzyl Alcohol and applying it to
your cold sore twice daily can stop a cold sore more quickly than almost any other remedy. The Mayo Clinic even
endorses this home remedy – so you know it works.
Lysine is helpful in getting rid of cold sores, even
though it's not some magical cure-all like some people think it is. Lysine-containing tablets taken when you
feel the start of a cold sore is an excellent cure for cold sores. You can even take them when you feel you may
have been exposed to the herpes virus. The recommendation is to take 1000mg of lysine three times each day, when
you feel that an outbreak is imminent, or when your outbreak is active. When taken for preventive reasons only,
you can take a lower dosage each day.
Lysine ointment has also been studied, and found to be
effective in as few as three days, in forty percent of participants in clinical studies. By the end of six days,
it worked on 87% of participants. There were no side effects reported.
Witch hazel can be dabbed on a Q-Tip, and applied
several times daily, to shorten the length of time you experience the cold sore. It works in a similar time
period as Benzyl Alcohol.
Probiotic yogurt can be applied several times
topically a day, and this is effective for some people. You may also wish to ice your cold sores, and then apply
the yogurt. A small dab of nail polish remover or Clearasil can keep it dry. These are both an effective cure
for cold sores. The Clearasil or nail polish remover are very helpful in keeping cold sores dry.
Vitamin B12 has been shown in research to bring the
levels of the vitamin up to acceptable levels in people with cold sores. 250 mcg of vitamin B12 help to clear
your condition up. B complex vitamins and folic acid may also help.
Lemon balm has valuable antiviral properties, and it
has been clinically shown as a cure for cold sores that works in five days or so. It can also reduce the number
of times a year you suffer outbreaks.
